Chapter 1
Uninspired… That’s what I’ve always been called, “You’re boring” “How original” that’s what everyone says. But that all changed one fateful Monday morning. It was rainy and dreary outside, water droplets drumming on the roof of the school. I was in math class reviewing how to approximate square roots, when out of nowhere–the power cuts out, And when I say ‘cuts out’, I mean it. There was almost no warning, One quick dimming of the lights, and a fraction of a second later they turn off completely, and they stay off.
After that It’s all a blur–Panic, order, Panic again, then… I get struck by lightning. Not joking, a bolt of lightning hit me square in the face. Now you may be asking ‘Shouldn’t you be dead?’ I’d say probably. But that’s not what happened. The next thing I remember was waking up in an ambulance, I look around to see several people I don’t recognize it black suits, with an odd… Shadow casted upon them from my direction. I look around to try to find the source of the light, only to find the source as–Me, My skin glowed softly, radiating upon the nearby walls like a comically large night lamp.
“Ahhh, You’re finally awake.” One of the people in black suits says–A woman, maybe 20. With Deep Blue eyes that looked electrifying reflecting the glow off my body. Swept back blond hair that seemed to sway in non-existent wind. Her expression is soft—like she’s trying to comfort a newly orphaned child.
“Wha… What happened?” I stammer, I try to sit up but something stops me. I look down… Great, I'm strapped down to the stretcher like an injured criminal in a cheap movie from the 1980’s.
The woman looks at me with an amused expression. “You were struck by lightning.” she says, her voice cracking slightly, as if fear is starting to creep in.
“Yeah, no shit. But that doesn’t explain the whole tied to a stretcher and human nightlight thing.” I say, with maybe just a hint of anger in my tone.
She studies me “You’re tied up because of the whole ‘human nightlight’ thing, you’re an anomaly.”
I start to hyperventilate, struggling at the straps "Let me go!". She glances at another person in a black suit who says one thing "Try χ(Chi) protocol". She looks at him like he's insane "Really? You sure?". The man nods "It should work". She looks back at me-still struggling and hyperventilating. She stares at me for a moment before sighing "I guess I can try" she reaches out her hand and places it on my shoulder "Relax" she says, her voice low and soft. I stop struggling for a moment and stare at her hand on my shoulder "Wha-What are you doing" I manage to stutter out. She smiles slightly "just relax".
A moment later something seems to take over me, my arms suddenly break through the restraints and all the agents tense, standing up. The woman's eyes widen. Before I realize what I'm doing I've grabbed her and for some reason... I’m holding her close to me like a child might hold a stuffed animal. She stay silent, unsure of how to react. The other agents just stare, not making any sudden movements.
My eyes also widen in shock “Wh… Why did I do that?” I stutter, staring at the woman–Who looks extremely confused and maybe a tiny bit scared. The man from before laughs “It seems you’ve taken a liking to agent Avery.”. I feel my face heat up “Liking?”. He smirks “That is what I said”.
I just stare at her, confused at what in hell is happening. I can’t seem to let go, I just stare at her, we’re so close our noses are touching, and her eyes are full of fear. I try to say something—Anything, but the words don’t escape my mouth.
Then my day got even better. The ambulance stopped, not like it would at a stop sign, Like it hit a wall. The agents fall to the ground thrown against the walls, most falling unconscious. But it doesn’t affect me, a field almost seems to shimmer around me. When it’s all over me–and an even more scared agent avery… who also seemed to be protected by the field I produced, are the only ones standing. I’m still holding her tight and she seems to be even more confused and scared now.
I look at her, her expression is a mix of fear, confusion, and relief “You–You protected me…” she says slowly, as if just coming out of shock.
